Tuesday, 2/18: Home Slice Puppetry

-Best Supporting Actor! (Foam & Rod puppets) & What's under the Hood? (Simple Mechanism Puppets):
This introductory course will be the perfect entry into a whole new world of the serious and silly-side of this ancient craft. What color do you make your puppet? Should it be furry or smooth? This class is centered on creating a character, all of the elements needed to do so, and why those decisions are so important when creating a character. You will never see googlie eyes the same way again. We will also learn about the use of polyfoam in puppetry and how dynamic it can make your puppet. Students will then proceed to create their character and build their very own foam & rod puppets. That's right! Not just learn about them but take one home. That you build. By hand. A "Slice" of the bigger puppet pie!

Then in the afternoon we’ll go for broke and build a second more complex foam puppet with a mechanism.  For a multitude of reasons, sometimes it is better to create a puppet that your hand doesn’t or can’t go inside. This class will focus on what a "Mechanism" is and how they are used in puppets. More than just a device that you put inside your puppet, mechanisms bring a whole new life to your puppet. In creating movement, puppeteers like you can manipulate this movement by using a cable, pulling a string, using a wooden rod, etc. This class will feature a more simple mechanism in the creation of your puppet.  Students in this class will build their mechanism and then construct a foam puppet around the device that they create. After we build the base it will be time to create our character and bring our creation to life.
