LIT Program (Leader-In-Training)
Entering Grades 8-10 for the 2026/2027 School Year
Thank you for your interest in Peabody Recreation Department’s Leader in Training (LIT) program! Being an LIT is a challenging and rewarding responsibility. All LIT applicants should be interested in working with children and possess maturity, flexibility, a strong work ethic, and the ability to have fun. Be sure that you are willing and prepared to meet the challenges presented by this position.
The LIT (Leader-in-Training) program is designed to be the next step towards becoming a responsible leader and caregiver for children. This program will provide a hands-on learning experience that will allow teens entering grades 8-10 to further develop leadership skills that can be used throughout life. Our LIT program teaches management and leadership skills and can provide basic training in such skills as first aid, group leadership, time management, and a variety of childcare skills. Our LIT programs can lead to leadership opportunities at school, in extracurricular activities and at future jobs; however, there is no guarantee that once the LIT has successfully completed the program, that he or she will be hired by our department.
The LIT program is an educational program, with a curriculum designed to develop the people and technical skills necessary to be an effective leader. It is not "working" at the program. An LIT is still technically a participant, and therefore, bound by many of the same rules and restrictions as regular participants. We require that LITs pay the LIT tuition upon acceptance into the program and attend the program during regular program hours. Since the LIT program is a training program, LITs are not paid, nor is a job at the completion of the program assured. We are happy to sign off on community service hours.
LIT acceptance is competitive, and only available to a limited number of applicants (4 per location per session, 2 per session at Tiny Tanners). It is important that the LIT candidate shows initiative and contacts the recreation department on their own to request the application materials, if needed. They should then carefully complete all of the application materials, and return the packet to the department in the time allotted. All essay-type questions should be in the applicant’s own words and neatly typed or handwritten. The formal interview may take place in person or via Google Meets, and candidates should dress appropriately.
Preference will be given to participants who have participated in our programs before, who have a strong application, and/or who have a strong interview. Placement as an LIT is not guaranteed. We do our best to place all applicants, however this is a competitive program and spaces are limited.
To apply:
1. Register below for the program.
2. Complete and submit the entire application via Google Forms (AVAILABLE MARCH 10TH) by May 22nd at noon
3. Wait to hear from the L.I.T. Director to schedule an interview.
4. Once accepted as an L.I.T, we will register you for the specific session and location and send payment instructions.
LIT’s can rank specific Programs on their application. We do our best to place all LITs at preferred locations and session, but please keep in mind that spaces are limited at each site per session. First choice is not guaranteed. Please rank all sessions and locations you are available for as this increases your chances of receiving a placement.
